Day 7: Don’t miss the Trees looking for the Forest-it has its advantages

TASK: You have a choice of just being content Single and riding this thing out or you can choose to be satisfied and get everything God has for you. What are the perks of being Single? What little things do you enjoy about this season? Please share at least 3.

I’ve often heard ‘you can’t see the forest for the trees’. I believe this means that we miss the whole picture because we are too focused on the little details. That in order to really enjoy a thing, we have to see it as part of the bigger picture. I completely agree with this comment…sorta 😉 One of my favorite passages is Romans 8:28 ‘All things work together for the good of those that love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.’ God wants us to see that all things, the little ones that may seem insignificant to the big ones that have life altering results; ALL things are commanded together for our good. This is beautiful and reassuring and speaks volumes of the sovereignty of our God.

Because I am often told that my brain works different than most people, I want to explore it from the opposite angle. I think that ‘if we spend too much time looking for the forest we will miss the trees.’ What does this mean? This is saying that often times we are waiting on the other shoe to drop, waiting on our next season to start or our current one to end, that we miss out on all the beautiful things to see along the way.

If contentment in Singleness is truly a journey, then why aren’t we enjoying it? In my book- I discuss Singleness being comparable to a cruise vacation with a destination of Jamaica. Now, although the captains of the cruise ship realize that your ultimate destination is Jamaica and they are merely the means of how you get there-they still go all out to make sure that you never forget your journey. If you have ever been on a cruise ship-you know that they never sleep. There is always something going on for your entertainment and enjoyment (not to mention the 24 hour buffets). Why is this? I believe because the creator of the cruise realizes that although you are going to Jamaica they still have an opportunity to make your trip even more satisfying by giving you the ultimate travel experience. I believe that God does the exact same thing. Your expected end to this Singles journey may be marriage-but it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the journey of getting there. He has loaded this time with so many ‘extra features’ for you to enjoy and grow in and learn about yourself, that this time alone can actually be favorable in some cases. If you could just LOOK BEYOND the forest, and start exploring the trees.

Singleness has its perks, there is no argument about that. Now the perks may vary depending on what you are looking for, but they are certainly there. There are many things that the freedom of not being attached to another person affords you. Before I opened my own business, I went on 3 trips back-to-back for an entire month, with just a day or two in between to unload and then repack my suitcase for my next adventure. Could I have done this married? Maybe. Would I have wanted to? Probably not. Who would want to spend an entire month away from their spouse (and if a married person says that they would, then that might be a deeper issue). Even in marriage, having personal time is important-but as a Single you have ALL the personal time in the world! ENJOY IT BOO!!! Run free in it, take the time to discover every tree along your path.

Don’t put off that thing that you are waiting to do. This is the only time that you will have to make decisions solely based on you and God. MILK IT! Go on that missions trip for 6 months, quit your job and start that business, cook dinner every night or eat out for a month, babysit for a weekend or fly to NY on a whim to see your best friend 😉 JUST.DO.IT! Live it to the fullest, give your entire life away for the Lord to use and watch this be the most amazing journey you have ever experienced.

Going back to the cruise ship, if you choose not to enjoy it, you will still get to Jamaica-it’s true that your destination hasn’t changed. But as you leave the ship, others around will be remarking on how wonderful the journey and how much they enjoyed the cruise with the mindset of ‘WOW, we are in Jamaica already!?’, and they STILL get to enjoy Jamaica too, while you are walking around with the mindset of ‘Jamaica what took you so long?!?!’ It’s your choice…choose wisely.

What are your trees? Let’s name some of the perks of being Single to encourage others to ‘get in before they get out’ of it!
